Margaret Beale Spencer, the Marshall Field IV Professor of Urban Education at the University of Chicago, gave the fourth annual Walter N. Ridley Distinguished Lecture at the University of Virginia on Feb. 23rd. Spencer is a developmental psychologist and professor in the Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago. She leads the Penn-Chicago W.E.B. DuBois Collective Research Institute, which engages in partnerships with racially, economically and ethnically diverse communities that have been traditionally underrepresented and under-resourced. Her talk was entitled "The 1954 Brown Decision and Contemporary Education Challenges and Opportunities," and was presented in the Rotunda Dome Room.

British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald Speaks on International Relations

Sir Nigel Sheinwald, Great Britain's ambassador to the United States, spoke in the Dome Room at the Rotunda Feb. 13 on international relations. His talk was free and open to the public. Following his address there was a discussion of his remarks, led by U.Va. history professor Philip Zelikow, former executive director of the 9/11 Commission and former counselor of the U.S. Department of State, and David A. Leblang, the J. Wilson Newman Professor of Governance & Professor of Politics.

Architectural Historian and Museum Curator Bruce Ambler Boucher

Bruce Ambler Boucher, who has divided his career between education, scholarship and museum administration, will become the director of the University of Virginia Art Museum on March 1. He currently is the curator of European sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, a position he has held since 2002. Boucher was introduced to a group of gathered U.Va. administrators, faculty, museum staff, students and friends in the museum on January 29, 2009.

This year's Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration panel discussion was called "King and Obama: The Dream The Promise, The Fulfillment." Speakers included Claudrena Harold (History/University of Virginia), Andrea Y. Simpson (Political Science/University of Richmond) and Corey Walker (Africana Studies/Brown University). Sponsors of the event were the Office of African-American Affairs, Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Equity, Carter G. Woodson Institute, University of Virginia Library, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The panel took place on January 21, 2009, in the Harrison-Small Auditorium.

U.Va. Sets Teach-In on Issues Surrounding Recent Terror Incidents in Mumbai

A teach-in on issues surrounding the recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India, was held Wednesday, December 3rd, in Newcomb Hall Art Gallery at the University of Virginia. Faculty, students and members of the Charlottesville community were invited. Faculty with expertise in areas related to South Asia, such as history, economics, literature and anthropology, as well as representatives of various religious communities and Pakistani and Indian expatriates living in the community, discussed the tumultuous events of last week and the background and context in which they occurred. The event was sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs, the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures and the International Studies Office.

Napolitano - Selected for Homeland Security Secretary

Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, a 1983 graduate of the Law School, has been nominated as the next secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, a cabinet-level post. President-elect Barack Obama announced his decision today. Napolitano also spoke at the Law School?s 2007 commencement, where she challenged graduating students to make sense of the transformative nature of technology, international law and the rule of law.
