Now fully optimised for the retina display on iPads, our third App of the early learning series introduces comparisons between geometrical shapes and objects across four challenges. The challenges are comparisons of big/little, long/short and tall/short. Geometric shapes includes triangles, squares, circles, ovals, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons and octagons. Objects includes boats, cars, dogs, flowers, houses, lorries, robots, trains and windmils.
In common with other Apps in this series, two colour palettes are included - the basic paintbox includes the primary colours of red, yellow and blue as well as white and black. The advanced paintbox includes the same colours as the basic paintbox plus orange, green, purple, pink and brown.
The first example (top image) shows the correct answer from the long/short challenge which has been filled in response with the prompt. The second example (bottom image) shows a successful attempt from the tall/short challenge. Within each challenge, six prompts are presented in random. Click an image to enlarge.
The App is easy to use and incorporates an array of visual, text and audio prompts to support learning. Audio prompts are linked to the colours in the palettes and the speech can be enabled/disabled.
As always with infants and very young children, the best learning takes place when the adults talks with the child as they work through the challenges together. Each challenge has a series of different shapes and objects.
Colour My Shapes & Compare has been designed for iPad, iPad 2, new iPad and iPad Air, running iOS 4.3 to iOS 10. The current App version is 1.7. The App is completely self-contained and only requires access to the internet if you choose to send an email with an attached screenshot. Screen shots can also be saved into the iPad photo album.
