Optimised for the iPad retina display, this App introduces sorting into sets. Within each of the four challenges, children learn how to colour the different types of shape and then sort them into sets. Two or three types of shape are displayed in different formats within each challenge. The range of geometrical shapes are displayed in different formats and selected at random from squares, circles, ovals, diamonds, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, octagons.
In common with other Apps in this series, two colour palettes are included - the basic paintbox includes the primary colours of red, yellow and blue as well as white and black. The advanced paintbox includes the same colours as the basic paintbox plus orange, green, purple, pink and brown.
The first example (top image) is from the second challenge where five shapes are displayed with the two different ones filled with colour. In the second example (bottom image), nine shapes have been displayed and three different ones filled with a colour. In both cases, the next step in the activity is to sort the shapes into sets by dragging a shape to a matching container. Click an image to enlarge.
The App is easy to use and incorporates an array of visual, text and audio prompts to support learning. Audio prompts are linked to the colours in the palettes and the speech can be enabled/disabled. The default setting for the number of acivities in each challenge is set at four but this can be changed to two,six or eight in settings menu.
As always with infants and very young children, the best learning takes place when the adults talks with the child as they work through the challenges together. Each challenge has a series of different shapes and objects.
