Wiki information

Using VOIP

An overview

Skype is a Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VOIP) telephony application. Podcasters find it useful to have Skype or Gizmo (both packages are available for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux) installed on their computer. With it, you can use your computer (usually with a headset with a microphone) to make calls. If calls are to other computers with Skype installed, then there is no charge. You can purchase SkypeOut credits which enables you to make calls to any phone in the world (often at reduced prices) and SkypeIn, which gives you a telephone number, allowing others (around the world and on ordinary phones) to contact you via your computer.

At Booruch, I have used Skype to allow listeners to get in touch with me. I've also used it to collaborate on Web 2.0 projects (you can send text, files etc). If you purchase a recorder such as Hot Recorder Premium, then you can record conversations (with permission), convert the file into .wav or .mp3 and include it in your podcast. So a languages podcast could include a conversation that you have conducted in the foreign language (for free, possibly) with someone on the other side of the world.
