Atlantis Community School SEF

The document status: Active

Introduction

This example is a Wiki-based version of the Self Evaluation Form (SEF) for Atlantis Community School. The SEF is a document produced by leaders and managers of schools in England to provide a record of their own evaluations of effectiveness and for use in future Ofsted inspections in England, the UK. Self evaluation is seen as a crucial component in the leadership leadership and management of successful schools.

This scenario illustrates how the application of the Wiki format can be used effectively by a senior leadership team of a school to foster a collaborative and dynamic approach to producing a SEF. Each member of the team has specific roles and responsibilities and the SEF provides "links" to the evidence base used, including the school improvement plan.

Content of the SEF

These are the sections of the SEF that have been included in this educational Wiki:

  1. Characteristics of your school
  2. Achievement and standards
  3. Quality of provision
  4. Leadership and management
  5. Overall effectiveness and efficiency

Roles and responsibilities

Whilst each member of the senior leadership team has lead responsibility for each section, all members are multiple authors, meaning they can write and edit any section of the SEF. Therefore, each one can make their own contributions and collaborate to produce and maintain a dynamic document that can be regularly updated in line with the school evaluation cycle.

As the educational Wiki is always available online, work on the SEF can be undertaken at any time (24/7) and all changes to the content of any page is automatically logged.

The evidence base

Within each section there are "hyperlinks" to the sources of evidence that have been used. For example, in the section on "Achievement and standards", this would be indicated in brackets thus (Evidence: ePanda 2006, FFT 2006). In the case of the ePanda, this additional evidence is provided in the form of a PDF document. Other examples may be in different formats such as a Word document or another common format.

A full list of the evidence base for the SEF is also maintained.

Sections of the SEF also include hyperlinks to the relevant section of the school improvement plan which is also in wiki-format.

School evaluation cycle

The SEF is maintained dynamically by each member of the leadership team based on the outcomes from the monitoring and evaluation cycle. This cycle spans a 12 month period, beginning at the start of the academic year in September and ending in August the following year when the results of the examinations are available.

Within each term there are a series of planned activities taking place. Over the school year these will include:

  • an analysis of student performance in external and internal exams;
  • progress being made against set targets (personal, subject and year group);
  • the monitoring of teaching and learning, including newly qualified teachers;
  • the monitoring and evaluation of curriculum planning;
  • outcomes of student, subject and leadership reviews;
  • the monitoring of student attendance and bahaviour;
  • feedback from surveys with students and their parents/carers;
  • outcomes from external monitoring and evaluation.

External sources include the local authority teams (the KS3 Strategy, the Gifted and Talented strand, the Behaviour Support Plan etc), the school improvement partner (SIP), Ofsted, the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).
